Summertime, and the Drinking Is Rum

We have passed through the magical force field of the Solstice, landing straight into summer 2008.

One of the great attributes of the season is the resonance of rum, which captures all the languid heat and dreaming quality of the days.

When James Bond walked into history in Casino Royale he asked for Mount Gay Rum and soda. That says it all.

Mount Gay is sweet and smokey, but not too sweet. It’s a preferred drink of sailors of all stripes, a nod to the beverage that was the backbone of British Navy for centuries.

And now we will consider the Mojito.

For there is also a place in our hearts for light rum
For fresh mint is heady and clarifying
For the sparkling is sparking indeed

Rum - OH MY GAWD!

You would mention this to an almost-rummy. In my non-tetotalling days I had a "special" concoction I named the Morgol. I think that is a word from "Lord of The Rings" meaning sorcery. It consisted of Kaloua (sp?) and dark rum - truly evil.

My collection of 2-liter rum jugs make great water bottles for the 'fridge now.

Dorki--yes, Demon Rum is well earned sobriquet (it's also the name of a great song in Robin and the Seven Hoods).

Glad you have embraced the Aqua Vita.

I spend a little bit of time hanging out at Tiki Ti, a tiki bar very close to where I live in L.A. It's the size of a Yugo, it's been there since '61 and truly feels like it exists in another time. Many of the drinks they have there are rum-based and the exotic flavor they provide is just right for the atmosphere. It's usually the side of the menu I stay on. I don't know that much about rum, but I've become quite fond of it and there are hot summer days when one of those drinks at Tiki Ti is just what is needed.

Mr. Peel, nice to see you. Yes, rum is exoticism in a bottle.

Bottoms up.

from today's "this isn't happiness":

pseudo rum-related if need be, I'm sure you'll dig it.

peteski, I totally dig it. And Thank God it's the authorized edition, or I'd be worried of artifice.
