Ian McShane Alert

It is fun to run into early guest roles of Swearengen. And he’s been on so many series in his long career that sightings are not that few and far between.

A McShane line from a recent sighting on Magnum, P.I.: “I swear Magnum, if I have to find you, I’ll gut shoot you and leave you for the rats.” Surely his whole career has been in preparation for Al.

McShane has been around for a long, long time. He was a low-rent matinee idol in a string of zero-budget UK movies in the early 70s but his career never really took off. He's best known now for a long-running UK show called Lovejoy in which he played a cheeky-chappy antiques scoundrel who gets involved in all sorts of antiques-based mysteries. Yes, it's as bad as it sounds. (McShane's sudden acting credibility is as bewildering to us over here as Hugh Laurie's elevation to leading man status.)However, check him out in Sexy Beast.

I get the feeling I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, here.

Wyn--I have no knowledge about your grandmother (as well I should not). But have you seen Deadwood? The material elevates all within. As for Laurie, I've very happy that I never saw him in his goofy mode, so he's easier for me to accept as hot.

Oh, and it's a Rusty Nail that's made with Drambuie, not a Stinger. I have been known to confuse the two.

Indeed, I'm a big fan of Deadwood - it's a shame it's getting canned, I was hoping for a Centenniel style saga. Ah, well.

I shall be perusing my cocktail recipe book forthwith.
